On June 19, the Rathenau Institute organised a meeting to discuss problems surrounding precaution and innovation with 40 citizens. The meeting led to lively discussions about questions such as: how important is it as a society to be careful with new technologies? Is it possible to be too careful? And who should be held responsible for guaranteeing precaution?

In spring 2019, the RECIPES project hosted citizen meetings in several countries. Citizens who took part in the meetings had the chance to reflect on issues related to precaution and innovation in relation to research and to provide their ideas and opinions.

German Bundestag discusses about precaution and innovation

On 12 April 2019, the German Bundestag debated about precaution and innovation. The debate followed a call of the German Liberals for the introduction of an innovation principle in legislation, while the German Green Party would rather strengthen the precautionary principle. The parliamentary groups in the German Bundestag are highly divided on the topic.
